In this EURIDICE DigHum lecture, organized by CAIML from consortium partner TU Wien, Daron Acemoğlu will discuss how Generative Artificial Intelligence can be either good or evil, depending on the choices we make as Society. Whereas human-centric advances in Generative AI may boost human agency and democratic participation, and increase productivity of workers through communication technologies, the opposite scenario — anti-worker production technologies and anti-democratic communication technologies — is now much more likely to occur. This is due to distorted incentives and priorities within the tech industry but also because of architectural features of leading Generative AI models. Daron Acemoğlu will conclude his talk with some policy suggestions to help designing an alternative roadmap towards a more human-centric AI.
