BibliotheekNet is an initiative that aims to establish a network of local emergency support centres via public libraries, enabling people and communities to regain ownership of the digital space.

Reliable digital communication is a basic service, yet it relies on infrastructure provided by just a small number of highly influential companies (Big Tech). More and more people are becoming aware of the disruptive effects of this dependence.

BibliotheekNet aims to bring two things together: a public information and communication network alongside the commercialised internet, and the existing network of physical public libraries where people can turn for support and information during emergencies, even when the commercial internet or the electricity supply is down. This network thus forms the foundation of a new, public internet: locally managed, based on open-source technology, free from tracking or addictive technology, and with community involvement. Similar initiatives are already underway in a number of European countries. (For further information: several articles on BibliotheekNet have been published in the trade journal META and in the Volkskrant).

During this afternoon event, Marleen Stikker from Waag Futurelab will deliver a keynote speech, followed by a panel discussion featuring speakers from a range of sectors, including libraries, technology, government and civil society organisations, who will reflect on Bibliotheeknet. There will be an opportunity to exchange ideas informally during the drinks reception afterwards.

Please join us on 1 October from 15:00 to 17:45 (doors open from 14:45) in the Aula of the KB in The Hague to share your ideas on how we can shape the digital public sphere in a way that is local, resilient and democratic.

Booking a place is essential; you can book a free ticket here.
