As a short, self-standing master research project, Auke Schuringa delivered a new innovative service called Speechbot, a speech-based chatbot framework for rare, under-resourced languages in the world.
The speech-matching package was especially made to handle rare languages which have a phonetic overlap with a widely-spoken and digitally resourced language, such as English or Dutch. The speechbot can be used with existing chat services, and facilitates the digital communication over speech, especially for those who prefer not to write text. Many African languages still have no written presence on the Web. Ts service atttempts to bridge this gap. The software is Open Source and can be downloaded from GitHub, see link below. It is an extension of the master thesis which was submitted in the summer of 2025. With these two knowledge products, Auke Schuringa, who is a W4RA member and works for the Internet Archives, has contributed to EURIDICE’s objectives for master education that serves the Digital Society.
