“In a world where memories are currency, identity becomes negotiable. In a world where emotions are converted into currency, what remains of a person?”

Idil writes: “Together we created a dark science-fiction movie where people can sell their memories as digital products. The society in the film is technologically advanced but emotionally empty and isolated. We used to concept of selling memories as a metaphor for how modern technologies can turn human experiences into digital commodities. Although the technology seems innovative and ground breaking, it also creates a void and emotional emptiness. This can be seen in how the main character is seen at the end of the movie, detached from reality.
The film challenges the idea that technology alone can solve social and economic problems. Usually technology is presented to us as something universally positive but the project made me think more critically about the risks of technological dependency and commoditization of everyday life. Similar to the digital systems in todays world, the technology in the film mainly benefits organizations and powerful people while ordinary people lose control over their own identities. Overall, I explored how technology creates opportunities while also deepening isolation and inequality if development is treated as a math equation where one-size-fits-all.”

Stills from the film, conversations and reflections in very different locations.
