This workshop “Paradigm Shift in Computer Science”, took place at the in Vienna, Austria, organized by the Digital Humanism Initiative, TU Wien and the IWM (the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna). It was chaired by Hannes Werthner, Stefan Woltran, Ludger Hagedorn.
This workshop focuses on the challenges for computer science and the sciences in general, the move from logic and algorithmic certainty to probability and LLMs.
It was a great event with presentations and amazing lectures and panel discussions on Artificial Intelligence from the perspective of Digital Humanism, by top-experts from various disciplines: AI, Computer Science, Philosophy, Social Sciences, Science and Technology Studies etc.
The history of AI from the 1940s to present day was extensively discussed, the competition and/or complementarity between symbolic and subsymbolic AI, the societal challenges related to digital technology, infrastructure and data in the hands of just a few big corporate tech businesses, in the uncertain future of our rapidly evolving digital society, the role of universities and the responsibility of scientists to do scientific research and design technology for the public, common good, and the role of Digital Humanism as a new fundamental approach to research and action.
The overall conclusion: Is there a paradigm shift in Computer Science research or is it more of a “paradigm glide” into a new era? The discussion and interpretations of the concept of paradigm pointed at the second option.
